A few things (since I’m too lazy to do separate entries):
1. That thing was good. I had fun, and would love to connect with a few of those people again on a more personal level. Observation: Bloggers seem to be much more attractive than IRCers (the only other internet based group I’ve been brave enough to meet en masse).
2. Poor UI design complaint of the day: In the spots where I need to enter dates on my program at work, it’s nice enough to fill in the slashes. Example, when I type 20040727 it shows up as 2004/07/27 – makes the process much quicker. Unfortunately, if I miss-type something and need to backspace, the forward slashes don’t automatically delete. It takes that extra keystroke to remove them. So it’s only two strokes to make the mistake, but it takes 3 to fix it. My brain doesn’t exactly compute that way, making me shake my head in confusion about 20 times a day.
3. I am a windows user and an idiot, and deleted that handy button next to “Start” that brings you straight to your desktop. It’s like my “Advance to GO” Monopoly button. I use(d) it a lot. That’s what recklessly clicking “yes” will get you. Does anyone know how to get it back?
4. You can’t even imagine how excited I am, after an insanely busy week, to spend my Friday night with myself, my laundry, and 8 episodes of The Sopranos.
Windows Key + D also does the same job that button does.
I use that icon a lot too, but I use the Windows-M combination even more.
To re-create the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar, follow these steps:
Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to create a file with the following lines:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save the new file as a file named Show Desktop.scf in the Windows\System or Winnt\System32 folder. Note that Notepad may automatically append a .txt extension to the file name. Remove this extension if Notepad adds it. These steps do not work if the file is named Show Desktop.scf.txt.
Quit Notepad.
Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the Show Desktop .scf file, and then click Create Shortcut.
Copy the new shortcut to the appropriate folder. In Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, copy the shortcut to this folder:
Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
In Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, copy the shortcut to this folder:
Winnt\System32
In Microsoft Windows XP, copy the shortcut to the following folder:
WINDOWS\System32\Config\Systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
Rename the shortcut to Desktop.
The Show Desktop icon automatically appears on the Quick Launch toolbar.
i hope this works out for you. i stole it from the microsoft folks, so i hope it works.
