Blogosphere, I’d like you all to meet Ray – my new roommate as of December 15th.
I have no pictures of Ray, and don’t currently know much about him at all, but I will share what I do know:
-He has paid his rent on time and not been any sort of nuisance according to any landlord I’ve spoken to.
-He has a girlfriend whom I suppose I’ll meet in fairly short order.
-He’s a self-confessed geek, and “tinkers” with computers.
-He is employed at a fairly prestigious technology institute, because once he finished his education, they just liked him that much and asked him to stay.
-He collects Transformers
-He comes with a rather large (I think 62″) rear-projection television set and a PS2.
Welcome, Ray! I think we’re going to get along just fine.
For those who were curious, the old roommate came by last night to pick up a few last things that she had forgotten, and drop some others off. She replaced a pot of mine that she burnt rice in multiple times, and a curtain rod she bent. Sometimes there are advantages to living with a neurotic people-pleaser.
I was ruthless and insisted on keeping her damage deposit to cover the first half of December, and tried to explain gently that talking about moving out for the umpteenth time over a 12 month period does not actually constitute notice, just because she actually followed through with it this time. I feel like such a hardassed slumlord.
Mmm .. Transformers. Can I come over and touch your new roommate?
I’ve found one place through myidealhome, and two through craigslist — but you’re right, the myidealhome (previously rentbc) definitely has a slightly … “better” clientele, for various definitions of better.
I first found out about it because I worked in internet real estate. Go figure. š
I’ve always posted on http://www.myidealhome.ca – it’s an independent business, but has gained the contract as the official off-campus housing board for SFU, UBC & BCIT. Everyone I’ve found off it has been a student, or someone who’s gone to post-secondary (or has friends who do) and knows about it. Not that university is a fair qualifier for normal people, but I find it brings in the smallest amount of sketchy applicants (as opposed to Craigslist or the newspaper).
YAY! I’m so happy you found what sounds like a decent roommie! That’s awesome news…
I’ve been wondering what it would be like to actually have a female roommate, but the two guys that I live with are pretty decent all-in-all. (As you know)
How did you find Ray?
heh, that’s the same type of TV my mom has — warning, they take up a LOT of space. My parents ended up building recessed space in the wall (the other side of that wall was a storage shed thing accessible from outside the house) for the TV because even in their rather large family room, it was taking up too much space. Rear projection TV’s mean they’re 2-3 feet deep at least.
That said? I miss my parents TV. I don’t even like watching TV all that much, and heck, I’ve got a fairly decent sized TV myself (34″) but there’s just something about an over 60″ TV that tickles my fancy.
I’m suddenly reminded of a Bizarro comment:
