I’m currently taking an MS Access class through work. Right now we’re talking about Validating Data.
The instructor just said “If you’re doing data entry work right now, I’m sorry. Because it’s a horrible job. It’s tedious, and exacting, and if you make mistakes you usually get in trouble for it. Our job as database designers is to create validation rules that force the users to enter good data and minimize mistakes.”
Nothing wrong with that statement, right?
Right… except….
MY JOB RIGHT NOW IS 80% DATA ENTRY!
I just want to smash my face into the desk.
Well, I’m sort of a junior database administrator… It sounds like he was being a little high on himself there. What he should’ve said was “our job as database designers is to … so that it’s easier on the data entry workers.”
I’ve been writing programs that enable people at work to connect to MS Access databases without using the MS Access program. Take that, Microsoft!
Well, I wasn’t insulted by his remark (though I’m sure others might be), just reminded that my skills could be used in so many more effective ways… and they currently aren’t. Which makes me sad.
